The Healing Powers of a Plant Based Diet | Living in Menopause
Jan 06, 2022It's been said that the menopause time is an exciting time in a woman's life.
That doesn't mean that it isn't difficult, though!
One of the most common symptoms of menopause is hot flashes. These are sudden feelings of heat and sweating that come over you at random times throughout your day.
I know... trust me on this one.
They can be embarrassing, annoying, and often debilitating to your daily life.
But what if I told you there was something out there that could help? There is.
The plant-based diet and menopause
Changing any lifelong habits is not the easiest thing to do and when it comes to food this is by far the hardest because food is emotional for many women.
It's the thing we use to celebrate, mourn, and comfort ourselves.
But if you're open to it, a plant-based diet can change your life during menopause. Because it did for me.
I didn't go completely plant based because I am a gourmet chef and I enjoy eating animal protein. However, I switched to 50/50 plant based lifestyle, so I am what I like to call a semi-plant based cuisine.
With making this slight modification, I was able to change how my body behaved in menopause. I'm sure this is good news for you, too.
Let me explain what happened to my menopause symptoms after I switched to a plant based diet in menopause.
- My hot flashes were gone within 30 days of changing the way that I ate during menopause with plant-based food. I couldn't believe it, but they were gone!
- My facial skin looked better and I had a lot more energy along with reducing my internal temperature.
- My fluctuating hormonal emotional symptoms went away as well.
Some women have strong hormone imbalances because menopause brings on these mood swings. But I didn't have them like that because I was eating a plant-based diet in menopause.
The bottom line is that if you're looking for an easy and effective way to minimize your menopause hot flashes, changing the way you eat is the answer.
And that means going plant based during menopause . You won't regret it!
But do you know how?
Healing menopause symptoms with soy
I'm not 100% sold on Americans eating soy only. But some soy can be beneficial if you eat a variety and not the same things.
In all honesty, I didn't know how to start cooking plant based cuisine but I knew that my diet had to include high quality good food.
Soy is high in quality protein and it's also a good source of fiber, iron, and magnesium. These are all important nutrients for menopause.
If you're not sure where to start, I recommend adding soy products into your diet gradually.
- Try using chickpeas making hummus or adding tofu to your stir-fry.
- You can also find soy milk, yogurt, and cheese in most supermarkets these days.
Just be sure to read the labels carefully so you're getting a product that is low in sugar and saturated fat.
Remember, menopause symptoms can vary from woman to woman. What works for me might not work for you. But I do believe that a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to ease menopause symptoms.
Give it a try! You might be surprised at how good you feel.
A plant-based diet can slash menopause hot flashes by 84 percent, finds a new study. The study, published in the journal Menopause, looked at the effects of a plant-based diet on menopausal symptoms in 48 women.
In a recent survey the participating women were randomly assigned to either a plant-based diet or a standard American diet. The plant-based diet focused on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes while the standard American diet group ate a typical Westernized diet high in meat and dairy with few fruits and veggies.
After three months on their assigned diets, menopause hot flashes decreased by an average of 45 percent among women who followed a plant-based diet, but increased by 84 percent among those who followed the standard American diet.
Other menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, were also significantly decreased in the plant-based group. The study's findings are supported by previous research suggesting that menopausal hormone therapy does not decrease menopausal symptom severity but a plant-based diet does.
So if you're looking for a more cost effective way to reduce your menopausal symptoms, consider switching to a plant-based diet. You may be surprised at how great you feel!
